DETACHMENT COMMANDER

2009 - 2010

Phillip Cook

Phillip's eligibility in the Sons of The American Legion, is through his father, a retired 25 year Veteran of the Lebanon/Granada

era and his two grandfather's, one a WWII Veteran the other a Korean War Veteran. Phillip has been an active member since the

                                                 day he joined the Sons.

When considering all of the wonderful programs to choose as my project for the coming  year…I had a very difficult  time.

Over the months I was able to narrow it down to three worthy choices, but that’s when I  first learned of the Liberty House in Manchester.

Liberty House is a homeless veterans shelter that does not discriminate because of race, sex, age, disability or national origin, the only

requirements are that they are drug and alcohol  free and want to succeed and have been honorably discharged from  military service.

In New Hampshire there are approximately 400 homeless veterans and that number is going  to  increase as our current troops are brought

home, 200 of them are in Manchester alone.  Of those 200 a majority of them are suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder or PTSD.

While Liberty House has beds for eight to ten Veterans, many nights they will open there doors to allow more Veterans to sleep in chairs,

on couches and even on the floor, especially in  the winter when the cold temperatures are a serious threat to human life. They also keep extra

food around because Veterans do drop in hungry and looking for food and no Veteran is turned away.

So I am asking every member of our American Legion Family to make a donation to help keep there doors open, the heat on and food in the

                                                kitchen.

Phillip has served numerous offices and Committees at the Squadron level. He is currently serving his fifth term as Sr. Vice Commander.

He has also served as the Veterans Affairs Chairman, Squadron fundraising Chairman and has served four year as Membership Chairman.

On the District level,  Phillip has served 2 years as Sgt. At Arms, 3 years as Chaplain, 2 years as Jr. Vice Commander working as the District

fund raising chairman.  Phillip is currently serving his fifth term as District Commander.

At the Detachment level, Phillip served as Legislative Chairman for three years, Leadership Chairman for two years, Americanism Chairman

for two years and as Community Service Chairman.  Phillip served as Sgt. At Arms for two years, and three consecutive years as Vice Commander.

Phillip also served as the Alternate National Executive Committeeman for two and a half years,

On a personal level:  Phillip been self employed for ten years . This affords him the flexibility to work his Sons obligations around his work schedule.
